A roche moutonnée is a geomorphic feature of mesoscale (1m to 1km of length), in the form of a boss or rocky elevation, of asymmetrical profile, having a less inclined, glacially polished and eroded, upglacier (stoss) side and a more irregular, steeper downglacier (lee) face made by plucking or quarrying of rock fragments from the basement.

What is Roche Moutonnee in Geography ? Geographic formations formed as a result of glacial erosion, resembling camel hump in shape, are called Roche Moutonnee or sheepback. As more resistant rocks will wear less, this structure is formed. These strange shapes appear, due to the absence of the same level of wear.

This diagram portrays the shape to an outcrop, also called a roche moutonnée. Initial plucking a long way from the crest implies slow sliding velocities and/or Roche moutonnées consist of a hill of rock, often with a smooth, often low angle slope on one side, and a steeper and jagged slope on the other side. The side that is smooth and relatively low angle is the side the glacier was flowing from, and the a steep and sometimes jagged side is the direction the ice was moving (Figure 17.21, left). Crag and tail is the opposite of the roche moutonnée as the ice hits the steep resistant rock outcrop first. This protects the lee (far) side of the obstacle from erosion.

The diagram below explains this process. These erosional features are seen on scales of less than a metre to several hundred metres. Here at the top of the waterfall (just across the stream) is a superb example of a relatively small roche moutonnée. It can be see clearly on the far side of the falls and the shape is very obvious.

Roche Moutonnee . Roche Moutonnee are outcrops of resistant bed rock with a gentle abraded slope on what would have been the upstream side of the ice (stoss slope) and a steep rougher slope on the downstream side (lee slope).

It's an outcrop of exposed rock created by glacial erosion, usually smoothed by the weight of ice on its upstream side, but more jagged on the downstream side where the glacier has torn bits of rock off as it moves away.

Roches moutonnées are asymmetric bedrock bumps or hills with a gently sloping and abraded upglacier (stoss) face and a quarried (or plucked) downglacier (lee) face that is typically blunter 1,2.

Striations, Roche Moutonnee and Craig and Tail . Striations . When a glacier moves across the underlying rock, the process of abrasion wears it away. It is the fragments of rock held in the ice that do the abrading, scraping across the rock surface like nails across a wooden desk top. The diagram below explains this process.
